Make-Up Questions and Answers

My eyebrow and eyelash hair have many white colors. How can I cover up by natural remedies. I am very upset. It should be permanent just like hair color.

Unfortunately I do not know of any way to naturally make the white hairs disappear. You will have to color them in with eyebrow pencil and mascara. Though one can have their eyebrows professionally dyed, we do not recommend this.

I just had my hair colored back to my natural color - a dark ash blonde or medium blonde. I am 49 and have blue eyes and I have a dark complexion. Now I don`t know what to do about make up. My old make up was for blonde - light blonde hair. Help! Thanks

Well actually one is suppose to choose makeup colors based on skintone rather than hair color, though they all play a part in what is right for you. Read our newsletter regarding skintones. Do not use extremely bright colors as they will make you look older. For blue eyes use a softer tone like soft violet or dark pink colors. For Eyeliner it is best to use the color of your eyes. Eye shadow colors should be gentle and soft, use grey, navy blue or plum colors. You will have to experiment with colors to find the right ones for your new look.

I am an African American woman with yellow/orange undertones to my skin. I like lighter colored lipsticks. What color would be best for me?

I would recommend that you find lipsticks with the same yellow/orange undertone. Even lipsticks with gold tones would work nicely. Colose Cosmetics has a product called Gold Touch that adds that hint of gold to the lips. It mixes well with all shades of lipsticks except pinks and is lighter. Praline would also be a nice color for your undertone and is also lighter.

For someone who is young, like around 13 or 14, what is the best makeup look to wear?

I love natural! It's also the trend. Skip Foundation (you shouldn't need it), find a concealer for those days when a pimple may appear that matches your skin tone exactly (because you can't cake on loose powder either). Lip gloss in a pink shade is natural, very light pink blush if necessary and a cream with a light brown (Marron by Colosé) eye shadow is best. Mascara should be brown in color, not black-that's for more drama. Either avoid eyeliner or use it sparingly. Think of eyeliner as an extension of your eyelashes. That is its purpose, to make your eyes stand out. Eyeliner must be shaded with eye shadow and this requires more make-up. Eyeliner should match the color of the Mascara.

Is it bad for your skin if you wear blusher without foundation or powder?

Not at all. In fact it can look very natural. Just make sure you find a blush that goes with your skin tone and make sure it is non-comedogenic (won't clog pores).

How many hours does a freelance make up artist work a week?

It really depends on how much they want to work. Freelance means the artist is free to work with as many or as few people they want. I know a few artists that work for several salons. They will be very busy on the weekends for proms, weddings and other functions. There is also a need for artists at TV stations, such as for the news reporters. Because of their schedules, they need people as early as 5 am and as late as the 11 o'clock news.

What colors look best on a red headed person with dark brown eyes?

Redheads always look great with green tones, so try a khaki green with a lime green such as Sahara from Colosé Cosmetics. If your red hair has a copper tone to it, copper, bronze, champagne and browns will look very good.

I've got long eyelashes but they are blond and whenever I put mascara on it looks real bad what can I do?

First, I think you need to avoid really dark mascara colors such as dark brown, black, dark blue and the like. Find a mascara that is light brown, white or even a blond shade. Curl your eyelashes before you apply the mascara using an eyelash curler. This will help to keep the tops of your lashes close to the eyelid and difficult to notice when you blink. Finally, when you apply the mascara, use the tip of the brush and go vertically along each lash to help cover the lash more completely. Colosé Cosmetics sell a brown, which is lighter and white, which sort of makes your lashes look wet. Try those and let me know how you liked them.

I have a lot of freckles but I'm only 13 and I've heard that I shouldn't be wearing so much make up at this age but I want to cover them up?

Good news about the freckles. Usually they fade with age. It's best at 13 to avoid wearing foundation unless you are really good about a cleansing routine. At 13 you are going through a lot of changes and foundation can clog pores and lead to blemishes. I recommend you use a concealer over the really dark freckles and loose powder or a compact powder on your face to lighten their appearance.

I have blond eye lashes but when I put mascara on the top part is blond and it looks proper bad.

Colosé Cosmetics has a brown, which is lighter and white, which sort of makes your lashes look wet. Try those and let me know how you liked them.

I have blue-gray eyes and black hair but fair skin. What make up colors will look best on me?

I recommend you use pinks for blush and lips. For eye shadow use browns, grays, pinks, creams and for a funky look gold. Those colors will bring out your eyes and the pinks will be best for your fair complexion. Its always fun to try new colors. Check out these from Colosé Cosmetics and let me know how you like them: Aubergine Blush, Cannelle Lipstick, and Marron, Savane or Indien Eye Shadows.

What eye shadow, and eyeliner goes best with dirty blonde hair, green eyes and light skin?

For eye shadow you should use lighter versions of browns, apricots, purple or plums, deep khaki or forest greens, since these are in the same greenish family and will brighten green eyes. Use the lighter shades for those colors due to your light complexion. You can also go with gold, lime-green, really light green, bright purple for a more modern look. For eyeliner, use either black or brown and its best to place it all the way across the upper eyelid and half way across the lower lid. Blend it into the eyelashes. Use either black or brown mascara too.

What eye shadow colors go well with hazel (brown/green) eyes?

The best colors for hazel eyes are browns, apricots, purples, plums, khakis or forest greens. Check out these color duets from Colosé Cosmetics: Marron (light brown and brown), Sahara (khaki and lime), and Lagune (plum and lavender).

How to get mascara out of fabric?

If you have already washed the fabric and placed it in the dryer it is probably too late to do anything. Try a stain stick or a soap with stain remover on the label. This should do the trick.

How do I know color combination for my make-up. My color is chocolate brown? Thanks

I suggest you read our make-up guide newsletter. The colors suggested for a chocolate brown complexion are outlined in depth and I am sure the suggestions will be beneficial to you.

What will cover up my discoloration on my forehead best?

Depending on the severity of the discoloration, you may want to try something like Dermablend, which will cover, even tattoos. If the discoloration is red in color, you want to try Highlighter by Colosé. This product is great for covering redness and shadows. The Compact Cream Powder Concealer by Colosé is also a great choice. It covers minor blemishes and discolorations well.

What would you suggest to cover up dark facial hair?

To cover up dark facial hair, I would suggest a loose powder that is close to your skin tone or translucent. You can also use a compact powder. The loose powder will adhere to the hairs and blend them with your skin tone. However, if this doesn't work, I would recommend trying to remove the hair either with laser surgery or with electrolysis.

I have blue eyes and I was wondering, would it look nice if I would put white powder at the end of my eyes (inner) or would it look to starish? And if it would look nice, what else should I put (eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow)?

Mmmmm. You could probably go with a white powder if you have a fair complexion. Anything darker than fair may look to starish. You may want to try a very light cream if you are not fair. This would blend better with most skin tones.

Try this and see if you think it looks nice: Apply the white powder/eye shadow at the upper lid just below the eyebrow and also at the lower lid, just above the eyelash. Find a medium tone (preferably in the brown family of colors) and apply that to the crease of your eye and blend it together so there is no defined line. Try black or brown eyeliner and place it only half way across your eyes and blend it slightly with the white powder at the lower lid. Use black or brown mascara (but use the same color that you used for the eyeliner. See if you like this look and let me know.

Could you please tell me how can I make my self look milky fair like celebrities do even though they have a brownish complexion?

Celebrities use a loose powder all over their face and neck that is either translucent or very closely matches their skin tone. This product sets their make up, but also gives them the flawless, milky skin you like. If you want to purchase this product remember to also purchase a loose powder brush as application is very important and you want the powder to evenly cover your face and neck.

What is the best make-up brand out there in the market?

Can you believe that there is not ONE brand on the market that is better than all the rest. Its true! There are specific products within a brand name that are top sellers, but that doesn't make them better. Marketing/Advertising will certainly help products sell, but top sellers are not always the best products. It would be very difficult to rank products because most contain similar ingredients and there are so many personal reasons why a customer likes one product or brand over another. I personally use Colosé Cosmetics though.

What eye shadow goes with hazel eyes?

If you want to bring out the green in your eyes, then try a brown, apricot, purple, plum, khaki or forest green eye shadow. Check out these color duets from Colosé Cosmetics: Marron (light brown and brown), Sahara (khaki and lime), and Lagune (plum and lavender).

What color nail polish suits dark complexions like Mary J. Blige?

Your nail polish is a personal decision. The sky is the limit in color. If you like the color that's what matters. If you want something that is subtle and blends well, then you will need to find shades that are similar to a lipstick that goes with your skin tone. I recommend picking colors that are reddish-brown, brown, purple shades and cranberry shades. Avoid all pinks, corals and bright reds. Try to find more natural colors. Colosé makes 24 different shades of nail polish and just recently came out with four shades specifically for French Nails.

Please help me! I need help, my eyebrows are really, really, REALLY thin, they are too weak, I can't even touch them because they fall!!!! What can I do? Please tell me, I will soon have NO eyebrows because they are falling off. They are so thin. It`s not because I over pluck them, they just fall! Please e-mail me as soon as possible, I need to know what I can do...Thank you sooooo much

Unfortunately there aren't any products on the market that are made for eyebrows that will help them grow or become stronger. If this just started happening it could be caused by something you changed in your life, an eating habit, a new medication, and it may only be temporary. It could also be hormonal changes. I would go to see a doctor and see if they have any recommendations. Some people do lose all of their eyebrows for some reason. They usually use an eyebrow pencil to create an eyebrow. If you chose this route, then pick a pencil that best matches your natural color of hair or slightly lighter.

What color eyeliner looks best for a person with blue eyes?

I know this is boring but brown or black works the best for all eye color even blue. The purpose of eyeliner is to extend the eyelash for more drama, it also makes your eyes "pop" out. There are certain techniques for the best application so make sure you try those. Also, if you don't plan on wearing eye shadow (and for blue eyes, browns, taupe, oranges, and creams are best) and if you don't plan on wearing mascara, then skip the eyeliner entirely.

Hi, I'm in 8th grade and go to a Catholic school wear they don't let us wear make-up. Although last year I did get away ( somedays) with wearing mascara and a little bit of eyeliner. It didn't really look too good though. I have blue eyes. I'm pretty pale and I have dark blonde hair. Can you help me by telling me how I could do make up that looks natural?

I love natural! It's also the trend. Skip Foundation (you shouldn't need it), find a concealer for those days when a pimple may appear that matches your skin tone exactly (because you can't cake on loose powder either). Lip gloss in a pink shade is natural, very light pink blush if necessary (I recommend the Cream Rouge) and a cream with a light brown (Marron by Colosé) eye shadow is best. Mascara should be brown in color, not black-that's for more drama and more noticeable. No eyeliner. Think of eyeliner as an extension of your eyelashes. That is its purpose, to make your eyes stand out. Eyeliner must be shaded with eye shadow and that requires more make-up. Eyeliner by itself is scary and would look weird. Eyeliner should match the color of the Mascara and is most dramatic if black.

I don't have straight hair, it's curly and frizzy, But I straighten it all the time. My face shape is kind of round. I'm thinking of getting "side bangs". Would they look good on me? What kind of bangs would look good on a girl that straightens her hair with a round face and a not thin body shape?

Do not get side bangs for a round face, this will make your face look rounder (and be more difficult to straighten). You need a straight or longer hairline along the side of your face. Shoulder length is best or very short like Isabella Rosallini, if you're brave. Avoid the in between length as this will highlight your face and its shape.

I recently got my eyebrows waxed and the woman messed them up completely. They are entirely too thin, uneven, sparse, and without a shape. She also seemed to have waxed part of my eyelid and now it is all puffy and blotchy and you can see where it was bleeding. Any advice on what to do?

Wow, not good. Unfortunately they graduate all kinds of cosmetologists even the ones in the lower half of the class! The thing with eyebrows is that you need to be very careful. I hope this doesn't happen to you, but it's possible not all of the hair will grow back! The hair follicle in the eyebrow is weaker than other hair follicles and over time waxing and plucking may destroy the follicle and the hair won't grow back. Not that this will happen to you, however, it is a risk. To hide the damage this women did to your eyebrow is to locate an eyebrow pencil that is close to the color of your natural hair and reshape with the pencil, fill in the gaps with the pencil and this should help it look normal. In the future, after your hair returns, I would pluck the stray hairs into a natural arch and skip the waxing unless it's from someone you know for sure is good at waxing (like someone recommended to you by a friend).

I am quite pale and have a hard time finding the right foundation color. I always look pink in natural light. Help! I just want a natural look.

It is strange that you would look pink since most foundations use a yellow or taupe additive. The wrong foundation usually makes people either look like a ghost (too light) or like they have a dirty face (too dark). I would recommend finding a product from a European country as they tend to match a European skin tone. Colosé Cosmetics and Skin Care from Switzerland has great foundation. I would recommend the Caprice foundation for your skin tone.

How do I stop my eye shadow from creasing due to oily eyelids?

I would begin your regiment with using a toner applied with a cotton ball over your eyelids. (Careful not to get toner in your eye!). If you use a foundation then make sure that is also applied to your eyelid. And if you use a foundation it is a must to use a loose powder. A loose powder sets the foundation and would help keep your eye shadow from creasing too. If this doesn't work, I recommend switching cosmetics because you may be using an inferior brand.

I don't wear make-up often but I'd love to start. How can I make an effort without going over the top?

I would skip doing a foundation and just do a concealer if needed with a loose powder on top to help set the concealer and even out the skin color. I would use a pink or apricot color for a blush and apply it only at the apple of your cheeks. I would go with a gloss (Liquid Pink by Colosé) instead of a lipstick, since that is more natural looking. For your eyes, use a light brown eye shadow (such as Marron by Colosé) in the crease and lighter cream color on the upper and lower lid. Forget eyeliner for now and apply mascara in either a brown or a black color. I recommend you experiment with color, it can be fun and you can decide what looks best on you during the day and during the evening.

I am 58 years of age with very dry skin. My entire life, I have had problems with make-up. I have medium toned skin. Anything I use on my face, lips, eyes brows etc. always turns red. I look like an indian, which I am part of. I need a full coverage foundation, but it must be a true Beige. I can not have yellow, warm, or red tones. I am most concerned about the foundation which I really need. I had a dept store make up lady say " Try this, I guarantee it will not turn red." Within 5 minutes, I was red faced and the lady was totally amazed. I have put on beautiful pink lipstick only to have it turn red. One great thing about my skin, is I can wear perfume and it will change on me and last forever. I can shower and it still stays on. That`s the great advantage. Could you please recommend a good full coverage foundation? Thank you so much and your articles are great. I'm glad I found you.

I suggest you start with Colosé foundation, probably Dore. No one has ever complained that it turned their face red...but I do not want to sound like the department store lady! It is possible that if you do not have red discolorations on your face prior to using makeup that you may have an allergy to it. You also should use a skin cream everynight too. A good one for dry skin is our Cream Sensitive or even our Cream with Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Should you decide to use our Dore foundation, please write back and let us know the results.

I'm am going to be 21 soon and every single person I meet that doesn't know me, thinks I'm only 16 or 17 years old. What can I do to make myself look my age?

Everywhere you look you read and see "how to look younger" but I am nearly 26 and don't look a day over fifteen, how can I make myself look ten years older rather then ten years younger?

It is very rare for us to receive a question on looking older (and now we receive two in one week). There is very little written on the subject. Looking sophisticated is what makes someone appear more mature. Make a jump from junior departments and stores to more contemporary, grown-up clothes. Buy better quality. Avoid wearing the most extreme versions of a trend. Choose a hair style that makes you look more mature. Other than that, just be patient and happy that you may have real good aging genes!

I'm going out tonight and want to apply eye shadow so it sexy and stands out like the cat walk models how do I do that?

Smoky Eyes Never Die. Smoky eye makeup is one of those eternal looks that always surfaces on all the runways. But it's so hard to get it to work if you're not some natural born make-up whiz! Look for a tapered eye brush that will give you a subtle look as opposed to a heavy handed one. And don't feel like it has to be a black smoky eye. Brown or rich berry tones are just as effective. First start with applying Colosé highlighter on uppler lids to eyebrows. Then follow with a light base color and place it over the entire eyelid. Place a medium shade at the lower lid and over your eyeliner (this helps keep your eyeliner in place and makes it more subtle). At the upper lid and almost into your eyebrows place the lightest shade/color. In the middle or crease of your eye place the darkest shade and blend to keep the three colors distinct but not obvious. I m a working female and have to work in an office for 9 hours at a strech. I want my skin to look fresh all day long. Please.tell me what brand, type and shade of foundation I should wear. thanks

Brands such as Colosé, Almay, Lancome and Clinique have products that last longer because their ingredients are better and more refined. It is important to apply the make-up in a way that will aid in how long they last. I recommend you start with a foundation all over your face, lips and neck, use a concealer as necessary and the most important part-use a loose powder to set the base in place. Apply over your base the colors you like. Apply the loose powder again over your colors, lightly, to set those in place (including your lipstick). This will help you with a longer lasting look. Of course eating tends to remove lipstick, so you will need to reapply after lunch.

What color should I use of make up? I have brown eyes and brown hair and would black eye liner look good too?

Brown eyes look great in grey, plum and pink tones as well as golds and burnt oranges. Black eyeliner would look very nice with black mascara. You want to think of your eyeliner as an extension of your eye lashes, therefore, black is the most common and best color for defining your eyes and making them stand out. Try Orient, Safari Gold and Lagune eye shadow from Colosé as well as their black eye liner and mascara.

How can I pull off a gothic look if i have light brown hair and freckles? I would dye my hair black, but i think it would look weird because of all my freckles.

Black would look too harsh for your complexion. I would recommend trying a dark auburn color for your hair (try a wash out, non-permanate hair solution, found at any drug store). You can still pull off the gothic look with that color, then apply a slightly lighter than your skin tone foundation and loose powder. Apply an auburn or brown lipstick and use a medium brown and dark brown eye shadow, such as Safari Gold by Colosé. Stay with a black eyeliner and mascara. Read Related Questions

How can you make a round face look slimmer? How do you make a nose look slimmer? How do you make your lips look fuller?

You can make a round face look slimmer by placing blush where the hollow of your check should be (you can find it if you make a fish face!!) and use a back and forth motion with the brush, not circular as that would make your face look fuller.

You can make your nose look slimmer by using two different shades of foundation or concealer that are close to your skin tone and when blended match your skin tone. Place the darker shade at the side of your nose (and slightly onto cheek) and the lighter shade on the tip or bridge of your nose. Blend the two shades together on the side of your nose. Use a loose powder to set the foundation or concealer in place.

You can make your lips look fuller by using a lip liner and placing it at the outer edge of your lips. Pick a liner that is close to your lip color like Grenat from Colosé Cosmetics. Blend the liner to the center of your lip to avoid a harsh edge and follow up with a favorite lipstick in a color slightly darker or the same shade as the lipliner. Praline from Colosé is an excellent choice.

What are more eye-shadow colors that can go with dark color skin and dark brown eyes?

I recommend you try to go with purple or plums, or charcoal or smoke, or even a cocoa or dark brown as the color in the crease of your eye. You will need a shade lighter for the upper lid to the eyebrow and a medium shade for the lower lid near the eyelashes. Pick three shades in the same color family and blend them for a smooth, sultry look. Use your favorite base shadow for all over and then try Onyx, Orient or Lagune from Colosé Cosmetics.

What helps get rid of vertical lip lines? What is the best things to do for the mouth area?

Believe it or not, for a quick fix, you can fill the lip lines with a wax type product such as lip balm. Place your favorite lipstick over the wax. To reduce the appearance of lip lines over time, you need to use an anti-aging product that helps to firm up the skin and prevent the deterioration in elasticity around the lips. I recommend Cream Miracle from Colosé Skin Care and Cosmetics. This cream contains Collagen, which maintains skin firmness and Jojoba Oil, which protects from dryness. Apply in the morning and evening in a massaging motion around your lips. Cream Miracle is also excellent for around the eyes and neck.

Why are you guys so stupid about this make-up stuff? Jeez, just go out naturally...your true beauty! Guys probably like girls with less then 45 tons of make-up on! Why not try it?

Apparently this question was sent in by a gentleman reader...It isn't stupid to want to feel better about the way you look. Make-up enhances a women's natural beauty. It is fine to go out naturally, however, some women want to even out their complexion and enhance certain features. I'm sure most women do this for themselves and not for men. We do not advocate "girls" wearing 45 tons of make-up.

How do I keep my foundation from melting?

You need to set your foundation with a loose powder to keep it from smearing or "melting" off of your face. Of course excessive sweating like during a work out will tax most foundations.

What color of lipstick and eye shadow would you recommend if I have brown hair and brown eyes?

I recommend the peach family for brown hair and brown eyes. I would extend that family to include apricots, bronze or copper, beige, tangerine and some pinks. I would suggest these colors for both lipstick and eye shadow. The eye shadow will need two-three shades/colors for the right application. The lipstick should be a match to your skintone with a hint of the peach or bronze/copper family. Colosé make-up colors that would work for you include, Eyeshadow: Savane, Indien, Marron and Orient. The lipsticks that would work best for you include: Mandarine, Praline, Caramel, Corail and Orchidee.

I really need some tips on the proper way to apply eye shadow. I usually use like 3 colors but I have trouble making it look good. Any tips would be helpful. Please help me!

Three eye shadow colors are best and you can apply them in two different styles. Try both and see which works best for you.

Style One: Take a light base color and place it over the entire eyelid to even out the natural color of your eyelid.

Style Two: Take a light base color and place it over the entire eyelid. Place a dark shade at the lower lid in a half circle at the base of your eye (right in the middle, so the lower middle of eye). Blend with a medium color in the crease and outer edges of your eye.

Apply your favorite mascara last!

How can I make my eyelashes grow longer or fuller?

I have not heard of any products that actually work. Of course, there are a lot of products claiming they work, but there isn't any proof. You can apply different types of Mascara's to enhance what you already have, but most likely it's your genetics that have set the length of your eyelashes.

What color eye shadow goes with bright green eyes and brown hair?

Green eyes are most flattered by golds and yellows. Also great are beige and light browns. These are all contrast colors and should help your green eyes stand out. I recommend the following eye shadow shades by Colose Cosmetics: Safari Gold, Silver Gold, Savane, and Marron. To compliment your green, try Sahara.

If I have stronger upper jaw and bigger frontal teeth should I wear lighter or darker lipstick and which color better suits me?

A lighter lipstick, or a lipstick in a tone that blends with the tone of your skin is the best choice for you. You want to minimize the appearance of the lip, so avoid reds and dark colors. Pinks, mauves, and corals are best.

I wear a white high necked shirt to work every day, is there anything that will keep my makeup from coming off on my shirt?

Unfortunately there are no products that stay on your face that won't rub off. I would suggest that you apply your make-up as usual and then take a dark cloth and rub off the excess make-up. This will prevent the make-up from rubbing onto your shirt.

How can I keep my eye shadow from coming off?

Before and after applying your eye shadow, use a loose transparent powder.

Hi, I'm Asian and have very short, sparse eyelashes, especially on the bottom. Is there any way to make my top and bottom lashes longer? Also, I've heard about certain products that are supposed to make your lashes grow longer and thicker. Do they really work?

There are no products on the market that are proven to make lashes grow longer and thicker. You can try different Mascara's, that when applied, make your lashes look longer or look thicker.
